The Markha valley trek is one of the most famous treks in Ladakh. The trail enters Hemis National Park, that is known as a wildlife sanctuary. Snow Leopards, argali, mountain deer etc will be spotted throughout the route. The high-altitude passes offer beautiful views of the surroundings snowcapped mountains. There are numerous villages along this remote valley overlooking green oases in the immense arid landscape. Staying in homestay gives an excellent opportunity to discover the everyday life of the villagers and their unique Buddhist culture. The Markha valley is part of the Hemis National Park so there is a high chance of spotting wild animals. Kang Yatse is the best option for those seeking a 6000-meter peak that is less crowded than Stok Kangri. This trek is recommended only to experienced trekkers. One must be well prepared physically and mentally for this trek.

  • Reach at the trekking point in Zingchen by taxi. as you start your trek you will start walking right into a gorge.
  • The trail continues further through the narrow gorge until it reaches the valley leading to the small village of Yurutse.

  • It will be a long day today better start early. Cross over the Gandala, you will get to see amazing view of the Zanskar and Stok range.
  • Downhill to the small village of Skiu.
  • Time: 6-7 hrs
  • Distance: 21 km
  • It’s an easy walk today through villages along the way. If it’s mid-summer you might be
    expected to cross the Markha River as sometimes it can be flooded, one needs to be
    ready for the challenge.

  • Continue along the river bank. Visit the monastery located right on the top of the cliff.
  • The path improves and cross a broad valley on the right side. The valley becomes
    narrow and higher and cross bridges on to the left bank and then reaches Thathungtse
    We climb up to Base camp of Kang Yatse to overnight tent.

    Later other staff get down to plan side Nimaling hardly 2 hrs walk.

  • Cross to the north of the Markha, climbing to the top of the highest of the three passes,
    the 5,306 M Kongmaru La, with its wonderful views from the top.
  • There are snow peaks in every direction and on a clear day the giants of Karakoram,
    including K2, can be seen on the north-western horizon.
  • The trail descends to the Martselang valley, following the Martselang stream to the
    village of Sumdo.
  • Drive back to Leh.
