Nubra to Hunder Trek

This region north of Leh, on the north side of the L Ladakh mountains, encompasses the Nubra and Shyok River valleys. The trek is fairly intimidating as it involves short, steep ascent to over 5000m/16,400 ft to cross the frequently snow-bound passes of the Ladakh Range. You then trek along the beautiful broad valleys of the Nubra and Shyok rivers, with the vast eastern Karakoram mountains towering over you to the north, Exploration of these Ladakh’s highest mountains.

  • Distance: 5—6 hrs
  • Max elevation: 3700m/12,140ft
  • Follow the track uphill past a few houses and fields.
  • Hike up through green pastures between high boulder filled moraines, climbing steadily for two hours.
  • Camp at Pulu- Digar. (4400m/14,440ft). possible campsite at Digar-la base camp after an hour from Pulu-Digar. (4700m/15,420ft).
  • Distance: 6-7 hrs
  • Max elevation: 5258m/17,231ft
  • The trail is zig-zag up the tiring and steep slope to a string of prayer flags on the top.
  • The view from the pass are excellent, looking over the Saser Kangri of the eastern Karakoram
  • Chumik Yogma (4620m/15,160ft) this is the summer grazing ground for the livestock of Digar and you will find a couple of shepherd huts here.

  • Elevation:3900m/12,799ft
  • Close to Digar the trail drops steeply to a collection of chortens and prayer flags.
  • The aridity of the Nubra landscape becomes starkly apparent as you see it contrasting with the vibrant fertility of the village fields in front of you.
  • From the village you are starting a desolate section of the route, make sure you have plenty of water.

  • Elevation:3250m/10,659ft
  • Cross the desert in a northerly direction, there is no path as such you may need to cross the stream a few times.
  • Take the cliff path, from the top there are good views up and down the valley
  • The village of Rongdu fields are irrigated by a tumbling mountain stream, soon you will come to a small stream to camp.
  • Distance: 5-6 hrs
  • Elevation: 3274m/10,750ft
  • Follow the trail heading above the main part of Rong, turn right for Khalsar and the rest of Nubra Valley.
  • Distance: 5-6 hrs
  • Elevation: 5602m/18,379ft
  • You will need to take a taxi from Nubra to Leh.
  • Drive to Leh via Khardungla one of the world’s highest motorable road.
