Day 1: We take the early morning flight from Delhi to Leh, to leave the chaos and heat behind and land at the heights of the Himalayas in Ladakh. The approach and landing in the Indus Valley are spectacular and introduce the adventure well. Leh is located at an altitude of 3,500 m, so we need a day to acclimate. We explore the cuisine of Ladakh and the local market. A short trip to the “Shanti Stupa” gives us a fantastic panoramic view of the Indus Valley. In the evening, there will be a kick-off briefing for the tour by our road captain with all the info about motorcycling in India and the route.

Our first journey with our Royal Enfield motorcycles takes us to two famous monasteries tucked away in the upper Indus Valley of Ladakh: Hemis and Thiksey. As we start with a warm-up ride, we get to know our bikes better while enjoying the stunning views around us. Hemis Monastery, which dates to the tenth century, carries profound importance, linked closely with the legacy of Yogi Naropa, the revered founder of the secretive Kagyu lineage of Tibetan Buddhism. After our exploration, we head back to Leh for the evening, where a delightful dinner awaits us at a nearby restaurant. We’ll be staying overnight at the Lha Ri Mo Hotel in Leh, getting some rest for the adventures that lie ahead.

The day begins with a delicious breakfast to energise us for the journey ahead. Before we set off, make sure your luggage is securely stored in the backup vehicle. Our route takes us out of the lush valley, cruising along the scenic NH1. Along the way, we will make stops at significant landmarks like Magnetic Hill, where the Zanskar and Indus Rivers meet, and the revered Gurdwara Patthar Sahib. Don’t miss out on the stunning beauty of Ladakh’s Moon land along the route. On arrival in Lamayuru, take the chance to explore the local monastery. We’ll spend the night in Lamayuru, surrounded by its peaceful atmosphere.

Starting with a short ride on paved roads to Wanla, soon we’ll switch to dirt tracks, inviting you to embrace the dust. Climbing towards Sirsir La at 15,700 feet, the journey gains a rugged charm with gravel roads offering a unique riding experience. Take a memorable snapshot at the summit before heading to Photoksar for a well-deserved lunch break. Prepare for an awe-inspiring ride on the dirt road to Singe La at 16,590 feet, followed by a continuous downhill stretch—be sure to handle your brakes carefully. Crossing Murgum La at 15,490 feet marks the beginning of an adventurous journey hugging the mountainside along the Zanskar River. Expect surprises like dry river crossings and off-roading that feel almost divinely inspired. On reaching the checkpoint at Zangla, enjoy the smooth road leading to Padum, where the day’s adventures conclude amidst breathtaking landscapes and the promise of more excitement ahead.

Get ready for a day filled with exploration and adventure as we journey from Padum, perched at 12,037 feet, to Purne, nestled at 12,150 feet above sea level. Our day kicks off with a visit to the scenic Sani Lake and Monastery, where hidden gems await amidst the mountainous terrain. Leaving Padum behind, we start on paved roads towards Reru before transitioning to dirt trails. Along the way, we’ll navigate narrow mountain paths, soaking in the thrill of riding amidst awe-inspiring landscapes. Gravel roads with steep climbs and descents add to the excitement as we make our way towards Purne. The highlight of the day awaits just before reaching Purne, where knee-deep sand, rubble, and stones promise an exhilarating challenge. As the day winds down, we’ll settle in for the night at a homestay by the Tsarap River, offering basic amenities but immersing us fully in the natural beauty of the surroundings.

A remarkable highlight awaits on the Wild Zanskar and Ladakh Himalaya Motorcycle Tour – quite literally, as we ascend to unprecedented heights. Embarking on a brand-new route, we’ll conquer the recently opened Shinku La Pass, reaching an astonishing altitude of 5,105 meters. Today’s journey requires utmost respect and caution, as crossing this pass presents a formidable adventure, testing the skills of even the most seasoned riders. Our destination, Keylong, sits along the Bhaga River in Lahaul, Himachal Pradesh, marking the culmination of an unforgettable expedition. Covering approximately 140 kilometres, this leg of the journey promises unparalleled thrills and challenges, making it a milestone in the tour’s itinerary.

Setting off on an enthralling voyage through diverse altitudes, we’ll depart from Jispa at 10,500 feet and ascend to the awe-inspiring Tibetan plateau destination of Tso Kar at an impressive 14,860 feet. Our journey will take us across several high-altitude passes, including Naki La at 15,547 feet and Lachalung La at 16,616 feet. As we conquer these formidable passes, we’ll make a stop at Pang for a hearty and comforting meal, providing essential nourishment for the adventures ahead. A picturesque pause awaits at Morey Plains, a captivating stretch that stands as the only part of the Tibetan plateau within India. This scenic segment of the road offers an ideal opportunity for a memorable photo break. Continuing our expedition, we’ll soon reach Tso Kar, a breathtaking lake nestled on the Tibetan Plateau, adorned with white sand. Besides its captivating beauty, Tso Kar is a biodiversity hotspot in Ladakh, hosting unique flora and fauna, including the majestic, Black-necked crane. Our accommodation for the night is situated alongside this picturesque Tso, ensuring a tranquil and immersive experience.

Leaving behind the captivating Tso Kar Lake, nestled at an altitude of 14,860 feet, our journey unfolds towards the vast Changthang plateau. Crossing over Pologongka La, we’ll navigate rugged roads to reach Sumdo, where a left turn guides us towards Changthang for a well-deserved lunch break. Continuing our route, we’ll head towards Loma, a picturesque stop along the way. Crossing the majestic Indus River, we’ll venture onto the iconic and mesmerising single-lane road to Hanle, known for its captivating beauty. As evening approaches, we’ll immerse ourselves in the serenity of one of the most remote villages, where an overnight stay in a homestay awaits, offering an authentic taste of local hospitality amidst the rugged charm of Hanle.

Get ready for an extraordinary adventure as we embark on a journey along the highest motorable road in the world, reaching unprecedented altitudes. Our destination: Umling La, towering at an astonishing 19,300 feet above sea level. With multiple routes available, we’ll carefully choose the best-conditioned or open route to reach Umling La. Each path promises a remarkable experience, culminating at the iconic Chisumle Bridge. Beyond the bridge, we’ll follow the course of the Kingdul River, ascending higher along the Chismule-Demchok. Unlike other high mountain passes, Umling La boasts a unique landscape devoid of deep valleys, offering panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. At the summit, proudly standing at 19,300 feet, we’ll capture a momentous photo to commemorate our achievement before enjoying a well-deserved hot tea at the Oxygen Cafe. As the day comes to an end, we’ll make our way back to the homestay, reflecting on the awe-inspiring journey we’ve undertaken along the highest reaches of the world.

As we embark on our final day of motorcycle riding, we’ll traverse the captivating landscapes of the barren lands, which hold a unique allure in this region. Keep an eye out for herds of Kiang, as encountering these wild asses along the road is a common sight in this part of Ladakh, adding to the journey’s allure. Enjoying the scenic panorama along the way, our route remains smooth until we reach Loma, where the road may become slightly rugged as we ride alongside the Indus River. However, as we continue our journey, the roads soon improve, allowing for a smooth and enjoyable ride. We’ll pause for a satisfying lunch break at Chumathang before continuing our journey towards Leh. With the roads in fantastic condition, the ride back to Leh will be swift and effortless, ensuring we reach our destination in no time. On arrival in Leh, we’ll settle in at our hotel for the night, reminiscing about the unforgettable adventures and breathtaking landscapes we’ve experienced throughout our motorcycle tour of Ladakh.
